As we enter the new year, many people have resolutions on their mind. A resolution can be any decision you make to change your life for the better in the coming year. Not all resolutions have to focus on weight loss.

At United Way of the Mid-South, our resolution today and everyday is to be the leading catalyst in moving individuals and families from poverty to prosperity. That’s why we partner with 120 high-performing agencies for a collaborative effort in getting people from where they are to where they dream to be.

If you are looking for a resolution for the new year that not only helps you, but also helps your community, we’ve put together a list with a few ideas.

HEALTH

Everyone in the Mid-South deserves equitable access to health services. At United Way of the Mid-South, we partner with several agencies that provide a full scope of medical services to get people on the right track toward a healthy life. Several people in our community are often faced with the decision of paying the cost to take care of their health or paying their bills. No family should have to put their health on the back-burner to keep their lights on. FINANCIAL STABILITY

Financial stability is one of the key pillars to addressing generational poverty and one of the ways we work toward a financially stable Mid-South is by providing Free Tax Prep each year. Anyone whose household income was $56,000 or less in 2019 is eligible for Free Tax Prep. This allows moderate to low-income families the opportunity to meet with a certified tax preparer to get their taxes filed accurately and on time. The trained preparers also help people claim all of the tax credits that apply.

In 2019, our Free Tax Prep program assisted individuals and families in filing almost 11,000 returns, putting back more than $14 million into the local economy. Click here to learn more about Free Tax Prep and how you can participate https://uwmidsouth.org/free-tax-prep/.
