Tax Credit That Puts Money Back in Working Families’ Pockets
In recognition of EITC Awareness Day, United Way of the Mid-South is encouraging eligible workers and families to learn about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)—a federal tax credit that helps millions of low- to moderate-income households keep more of what they earn.
The EITC is designed to support working individuals and families by reducing the amount of taxes owed and, in many cases, providing a refund. Despite its benefits, the Internal Revenue Service estimates that one in five eligible taxpayers does not claim the credit, often because they are unaware, they qualify.
Individuals may qualify for the EITC even if they:
- Earned income from wages, self-employment, or gig work
- Are single, married, or raising children
- Had income changes during the year
- Did not owe federal income tax
To support the community, United Way offers free tax preparation through its Free Tax Prep (FTP) program, helping residents determine their eligibility and file their taxes accurately and on time. Those earning $70,000 or less in 2025 may qualify for free tax prep by an IRS-certified volunteer at locations across the Mid-South. Interpreters are available at select sites. FTP saves individuals up to $2.6 million in filing fees and enables families to maximize their refunds, which can represent 20% or more of their income—directly impacting financial mobility.
Mid-South residents are encouraged to check their eligibility and learn more by visiting www.uwmidsouth.org/free-tax-prep or contacting 211 to find available locations and make an appointment.
